Tooth Extractions for Children
Tooth extractions can be stressful for both children and parents, but they are a common procedure in most dental offices. A tooth may need to be removed if it has excessive decay or to create space for orthodontic treatment.
Request an AppointmentOur doctors and team prioritize your child’s comfort and will review the treatment plan with you before starting. After administering a local anesthetic, the doctor will remove the tooth. In cases of impacted or complicated extractions, sedation options may be discussed.
After the extraction, the dentist will provide post-operative instructions and place a small piece of gauze over the site to stop bleeding and help a clot form. Replace the gauze every 20 minutes until bleeding stops.
Post-Extraction Care Tips (First 24 Hours)
- Use over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers if recommended by the dentist.
- Offer your child soft foods for the first 24 hours after extraction.
- Avoid drinking from a straw, rinsing, spitting, or brushing the extraction area for at least 24 hours to prevent dislodging the blood clot and avoid dry socket.
- Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the area for about 20 minutes to reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Contact our office immediately if your child develops a fever, severe pain, or chills.
At Waterview Dental Group, your child’s comfort is always a priority. The dentist will discuss their individual situation with you to determine the best approach for a safe and comfortable treatment experience.
