Topical Fluoride Treatments

Topical fluoride treatments help protect your child’s teeth from cavities between visits by strengthening the enamel. The application method depends on your child’s age. For younger children, a fluoride varnish is gently brushed onto the teeth. This varnish hardens on contact with saliva, forming a protective layer that is brushed away later that evening.

For older children, fluoride is usually applied with a foam tray that sits in the mouth for a short period. A suction straw is used to remove any excess foam and saliva. After treatment, your child should avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes to allow the fluoride to fully take effect.

Our doctors and hygiene team are always happy to answer your questions and discuss the best fluoride treatment options for your child.
